Thieves tend to have natural confidence with their aspect. Hope is shown to relate to religion, and science is the opposite, replacing belief with cold hard facts and theories and questions. And this is less of a concrete theory, but maybe the Thief has some sort of science-related hobby. This Thief probably keeps those items around to laugh at them.
